Our Amel Super maramu

In 2019 we bought our 1991 Amel Super Maramu (hull number 61). More about the purchase story can be found in our blog.

We named her KFOS EP 1 which is short for “Kitty From Outer Space Exploration Pod 1”.

What was planned to be a month or two of quick fixes and upgrades turned into a one-year refit because we didn’t take into account that the whole of France is pretty much closed throughout August which pushed most of our boat jobs into autumn.

We weren’t even near to ready before the first winter storms hit. Then as winter turned into spring most of Europe closed its borders and went into Covid lockdown. Not that we could have gone anywhere at that time as we had no reliably working engine. But we also didn’t have the chance to get it fixed before early summer only to find out that the issue wasn’t just the engine but a broken transmission.

But by the end of summer we also got that last big piece of the puzzle sorted out and finally after about 14 months in lovely La Rochelle we set sail early September 2020 to go…North.

The ultimate plan is to take KFOS EP 1 back to the South Pacific and New Zealand over the next few years. But while we have the boat in Europe we first take her North.

The first season we sailed her up to Germany for winter – and what a winter it was!

And the second season – well the first full season for us on the boat – we took her to Sweden for a wonderful summer in the Baltic and the Bothnian sea.
